Governor issues state of emergency ahead of winter weather

Gov. Kay Ivey has declared a state of emergency ahead of winter weather expected to hit Marengo County starting tonight and into tomorrow.

Marengo County will be under a winter storm warning from 6 a.m. Monday through midnight Monday night.

According to the National Weather Service, light freezing rain is expected across West Alabama tonight and then a winter storm with mixed precipitation across the western half of Central Alabama Monday and Monday evening is expected.

Residents can expect a mixture of freezing rain and sleet. Forecasters also warn that black ice could become an issue, especially over bridges and overpasses, west and along of I-65.

The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

NWS forecasts ice accumulations up to two-tenths of an inch and total sleet accumulations up to one-quarter of an inch.

Temperatures are expected to fall to 15 degrees or below Monday night into Tuesday morning, with wind chills in the single digits to near zero in some areas.

These risks include Demopolis, Linden, Sweet Water, Thomaston — the entire Marengo County.

Marengo County EMA suggests that residents check https://algotraffic.com/ for road conditions during this winter weather event.

Power outages could also become a problem.
