Wilson, Smith grab All-America honors
LIVINGSTON – University of West Alabama defensive end Ridge Wilson and place kicker Ryne Smith have been named to the 2012 Daktronics All-America Football team. Both Tiger seniors were named to the second team.
Wilson, a senior from Louisville, Ky., was the Gulf South Conference defensive player of the year after recording 67 total tackles, 11 for loss and 11 sacks. In his only season at UWA after transferring from Kentucky, Wilson led the GSC in both sacks and tackles for loss while forcing two fumbles and recovering one.
Smith, a senior from Madison, Miss., was a first-team All-GSC selection after converting 16-of-17 field goal attempts and 50-of-52 PAT tries. He set the NCAA Division II record for consecutive field goals made with 24 over the last two seasons. Smith, who originally came to UWA to play on the Tiger baseball team, led the GSC in scoring with 96 points.
The Tigers finished the season 9-4 and won the first outright GSC title in school history along the way. Wilson and Smith were two of just three GSC players to be named to the Daktronics squad. Valdosta State offensive lineman Ryan Schrader was a first team choice.
