Raising childhood cancer awareness

When I visited 10-year-old Anna-Coleman Yelverton this past week, I was in for a treat. She was so full of energy and excitement that I wished my visit could have been much longer than the time I spent with her. However, only a few hours prior, I learned from her mother, Jennifer Thomason, that Anna-Coleman has battled childhood cancer.

Throughout September, Jennifer and other families have agreed to tell their stories of how this illness has impacted their families. According to the Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer 2010 statistics, more than 140 children will be diagnosed with cancer this year.

Jennifer prays for good news about Anna-Coleman’s continued progress during her cancer remission when she goes for a routine scan this month.

Thomason has decided to bring awareness to the cause by selling T-shirts for $20. During the visit, Thomason plans to present a check including the monies raised to A-Team ministries, a group who provides support to families of cancer patients.

The hot pink T-shirts read Anna’s Angel’s and on the back list those they know who have cancer, had cancer or who has passed away as a result of the disease. I urge those who can, to purchase a shirt to support children, like Anna-Coleman.
