UWA ranked in regional poll

LIVINGSTON, AL- West Alabama women’s basketball team is ranked No. 5 in the first Division II South Region rankings released on Wednesday. The Tigers are currently 12-4 overall and 4-0 in Gulf South Conference play.

“Being in the regional poll was on our list for short term goals,” Head Coach Amanda Marks said. “Now we have to stay there to reach one of our long term goals of making the NCAA Tournament.”

Marks picked up her 150th career win on Monday, as the Tigers defeated Alabama-Huntsville to remain undefeated in the GSC. Six other GSC schools join UWA in the South rankings: Christian Brothers (No. 3), Delta State (No. 4), Central Arkansas (No. 7), Lincoln Memorial (No. 8), West Florida (No.9) and Valdosta State (No. 10).

Veronica Lee leads the Tigers averaging 13.1 points per game, while teammate Tausha Evans is scoring 11 points per contest. Yolanda Thomas leads UWA with 6.3 rebounds per game while also averaging 8.4 points a game.

The top-5 teams of each region at the end of the regular season are guaranteed a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers travel to Valdosta State for a 4:30 p.m. tip off on Saturday. West Alabama will then face West Florida on Monday in Pensacola, Fla., with the game time set for 5:30 p.m.
